Lake Pukaki

This is a photo taken  a good few years ago on my trip around the South Island of New Zealand.    Lake  Pukaki is situated in the central Alpine area of the South Island….The peak in the distance is Mt Cook.       This area featured a number of times in the  “Lord of the Rings” movies..   Camera gear was nothing special if my memory serves me correct it was a 9 mega pixel Fuji point and shoot. (9 mega pixel was a lot back then    )

Pilbara

Just recently got back from a two week camper trailer trip through the Pilbara and Karijini National Park  .   This was a photo of the landscape from behind the Tourist Centre..will see about adding some more photos from the Pilbara in weeks to come.   Highly recommend a trip to Karijini  NP, the gorges are spectacular and also a photographers dream destination with such a varying landscape     …Kind regards John

Esperance Port

Ive been a bit slack just lately to adding photos to the blog…so heres the first for 2011                                                                                                                                                                                                         Late last year..work had me back and forth to Esperance a number of times ..and what with the lead contamination scare… the port was in over drive.                                                                    This photo was taken with my very basic Fuji point and shoot camera that I take with me for its compactness to do field work.   The camera was on  a tripod with a time exposure  .                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             As the sun just  disappeared and the Ports lights came on, and along with a small front approaching..  I manage to get a balance between ambient light and the  lights of the Esperance Port.  With the time exposure giving softness to the water and sky….  Kind Regards…..John

Dylan..Just add water

I took this photo approx 12 months ago but have been meaning to add it to the blog for a while

This is a photo of Dylan our Border Collie…our kids have all left home so he gets spoilt like a member of the family…Dylan is a walking clock with all the features of an IPhone all built into his brain…You don’t need to set your alarm as Dylan will shove open the bedroom door to remind you a new day has started and its time for a morning walk….You get home from work he gives you 30 minutes rest and then kindly reminds you time for afternoon walk….You have your meal the plates start to get scrapped and wash and there’s a bark to remind you it’s time to feed him….You sit down in your favorite recliner rocker and he will be at your feet with his chin on your slippers….I couldn’t wish for a more loyal and well natured canine member to the family..Ooh….and did i mention Dylan loves to swim….That’s right   “Dylan…just add water”

A New World In The Morning

My Border Collie Dylan well he’s like a built in alarm clock..and a routine that’s also clock work. The other morning it was a push open of the bedroom door from him and a wet nose in the face..with a look from him.. of..it’s time to get up.. “You know the routine..if you want to capture special moments,..you’ve got to make the effort”…as such I was up before sunrise camera in the car and Dylan in the back we made our way down to the Lower King Jetty.  The sun was finding it hard to bring in the new morning due to a heavy fog which in a way just added to the atmosphere, Dylan had a ball and I capture a photo again of  MY backyard…OYSTER HARBOUR..Albany…Western Australia.…hope you enjoy..regards…John.

Sweet Bread…Cape Naturalist WA

Last week we hooked up the Camper Trailer and headed for Dunsborough/Busselton for a weeks break. Plan was to incorporate some Relaxation, Geo-Caching and Photography.  Had a great time ..the weather was near perfect, loved Geographe Bay.

We also dropped into have a squizzy around Christian Fletcher’s Studio…what can I say..amazing..very nice images..Whilst my photos  may not be on the same caliber as Mr Fletcher’s…I did though have just as much fun.  Both photos below are of Sugar Loaf Rock taken from different spots.. photos taken 2 days apart..one pre storm and one post storm. The day of the calm photo..the ocean was almost like a sheet of glass..and I cant remember when the sky was such a rich blue..not a cloud anywhere.

The Old Cattlin Mine Head

I’m a bit of a keen Geo-Cacher  (http://www.geocaching.com) (as well as photographer)….and on a recent trip on the way from Albany over to Esperance I went to pick up another cache..this time just north of Ravensthorpe…I was surprise to find an Old Mine Head..After speaking to a colleague from the Ravy Agricultural Centre he gave me a bit of the past history on the Old Cattlin Mine Head. (I’ve notice some maps have listed it as Catllin and a few others as Caitlin..I’d be keen to find out whats correct)

Of course today there is a new mine further up stream on the Cattlin Creek ..its surpise surprise called the Cattlin Mine..and it extracts Lithium… (Isn’t that the stuff the Star Ship Enterprise uses to run on …..and Scotty would always say…. “Why..it’s the Lithium Reactor..she just ain’t gonna take it Captain”

Whilst the photograph is nothing special..the old history and site though is….SO..If your’e going through Ravensthorpe  WA…take Hosking’s Rd to the north out of the townsite.. and follow it all the way to the mine head;… Regards John

A Twilight Sunrise

On my last visit to Esperance WA approx a month ago, I was up before the sun showed up and then down to Twilight Beach…

Twilight Beach Esperance  WA is a photographers dream at any time but my aim here was to get those nice saturated sunrise colours and with the use of a relative slow exposure get a silky finish to the water moving over the sand…Regards….John

King River Paper Barks

One of my favourite local Albany areas… is …Oyster Harbour,  since it’s a hop step and jump down the road from home…. The fact that my Border Collie.. Dylan, adores anything that’s water is also another reason for regular visits to various parts of this body of water that has many moods depending on time, light and seasons…(The water ..that is..not the dog..though he does have his moments).

This photo was taken on the King River (one of the estuary’s that empties into Oyster Harbour) approx 1 km up-stream…The sun was setting over my left shoulder when I found this gnarly old Paper Bark leaning over the river bank begging for its photo to taken.

The Albany Entertainment Centre (WA)

Camera was on Manual and on a Tripod (no filters), I then tweaked the lighting a little in my photo management program (ACDsee) and then ran it through a HDR process using a “Topaz”  plug-in in Photoshop CS4
